Astilbe Beauty of Ernst is a clump-forming perennial valued as much for its foliage as for its flowers. Divided leaves emerge bright green, mature through burgundy, purple, and green in summer, then turn gold, orange, and russet in fall. Long, narrow plumes of pale pink flowers rise on dark red stems in mid- to late summer.
Plant it in a shaded border, woodland garden, moist ground-covering group, or outdoor container. Rich soil should stay consistently moist without leaving the crown in standing water. Shelter the foliage from hot afternoon sun, add organic mulch while keeping the crown clear, and water deeply whenever the soil begins to dry. Faded plumes may be removed or left for winter interest before the old growth is cleared in early spring.
