WINGED BEAUTIES HERE WE COME!
*This offer will close officially on March 1st for final seed germination.
Enjoy our curated, specialty selection of eight types of flowers, a total of 32 plants for monarchs and swallowtails. These hardy specimens are grown seasonally and sustainably on our farm. Like our fresh-cut selections, these varieties ask for little to no maintenance and love full sun. The flowers are so unique, we have to purchase seed online to germinate for ourselves to grow. Most are not found locally to buy.
In the last five years, we made an effort to provide habitat for these butterflies to feed and lay their eggs on our farm. Witnessing daily the flowers they obsess over, we took the liberty of hand selecting a mixture of annuals and perennials. The perennial varieties will continue to bloom yearly with bounty, and can even be used for fresh cut flowers in the future. A double bonus for human and nature longterm.
Swallowtail butterflies like to lay their eggs on dill and parsley, which the larvae love to eat. While harvesting in our fields, we often come across the larvae, gently pick them off and place back in our abundant nursery. They easily become identifiable once you know what to look for.
Monarchs continue to have a special place in our hearts after collecting, raising and releasing them. After installing several acres of Monarch habitat on our farm, we noticed how much they love floating around in the garden on various milkweed species, monarda, hyssop, marigolds and yarrow. What's great about these plants is their long, regenerative bloom life. All types of butterfly species keep coming back for more seasonally.
This share is a one-time, pick-up of 8 specialty butterfly varieties to fill your very own monarch and swallowtail garden. Each seedling type will come in 4-pack cells. You will receive 4 seedlings of each variety, a total of 32 plants!
All plants are germinated and grown by Barnswallow, utilizing our sustainable greenhouse that is temp controlled and built by local Iowan contractors with local Iowa products and recyclable materials. The seedlings will be hardened off and ready to plant upon pick up. The exact mix of flower varieties and colors may be slightly adjusted after germination. We reserve the right to substitute based on the success of that seed germination.
The following are plant varieties in the share...
Lemon Monarda (Purple)
Giant Purple Hyssop (Blue/Purple)
Butterfly Milkweed (Orange)
Swamp Milkweed (Crimson or White)
